weekend ramblings

lastnight i took rhys to see the final lighting of the plaza theater's marquee. the ol'gal is being torn down... hopefully something wonderful, like trader joe's will make it's way into the plaza... wishful thinking, i know, but it doesn't cost anything to dream!

we had been toying with the idea of going to niagara falls... I've always wanted to see the falls in the winter, so c asked if we should go (yesterday) and stay the night. while that would have been delightful, last minute trips are hard because of the pooches... and, niagara falls is only a little under 2 hours away, so we figured that just going in the morning would suffice... the kids could watch movies or play on their leap pads. normally, i probably wouldn't have gone beyond entertaining the thought of a winter day trip, except i found out that buffalo now has a trader joe's!!! that, paired with one of c's favorite bakeries, dicamillo's, and it was a go. c was so happy, that, as she was taking her shower, i heard her singing, "reunited and it feels so good..." ... and she dedicated the song to the cassata cake. true story.

we got up early this morning... and, since it's daylight savings, our early was even earlier, and man was i feeling it! thank goodness i gassed up delilah lastnight, because we could get straight on the road this morning.

our first stop was dicamillo's. c loves their cassata cake. a lot. so much so, that a few years ago, she left the bakery, cassata cake and fork in hand, and ran straight into a telephone pole. for real smacked into the pole! it was great! today, i wasn't lucky enough to witness a repeat, but the delicacies were as yummy as ever!

after the bakery, we went shopping at the outlet mall... we scored the girls some super adorable, super cheap nikes, and some clothes for all of the kids. after the outlets, we went to the falls. niagara falls never gets old. ever. i love it there. and today i would get to break in my selfie stick! unfortunately the walkway to the falls was full of ice cold, knee high slush. that, paired with the mist from the icy falls, we could barely see anything. to add insult to injury, there comes a humbling time in one's life when one must succumb to the fact that they need help... i am obviously lacking in selfie stick skillz... sigh.

after the falls, the angelic melody of all that is trader joe's, beckoned me there with their song of love. perusing the aisles at t.j. has got to be one of the most therapeutic things that i can think of... well, when the trio is cooperating, and, low and behold, today there were! after all, there was joe-joes and beet hummus and champagne pear vinaigrette to be had! okay, we got the joe-joe's and dressing, but i just couldn't bring myself to get the beet hummus, even though i was assured that it was delicious. i did, however, get the Mediterranean hummus, along with a plethora of sauces and cheeses and spices, oh my!

weekends fly by way too fast. i need a lot more weekend and a lot less week in my life! thank goodness summer break is sort of right around the corner...

  1. I love impromptu day trips! I cannot imagine Niagra Falls in the winter though, brrrrr. I'm looking forward to taking our boys this summer if we make it to NY to see my wifes family.
