to preface the story, while in the nicu, both girls would have a bm every. single. diaper. change. once we got home, quinnie stopped going. just like that. we took her to the dr. and he told us to give her prune juice. well, after 4-ish days, two rectal stimulations, 2 suppositories and prune juice later, she finally went. well, she hadn't gone again, until friday, when it all began...
during the girls' friday 8 p.m. feed, quinnie decided that it was time to let loose. c and i celebrated and, as c cleaned her up, i went to spray 'n wash her clothes. i looked at lynci, who was looking around, and went to treat quinn's clothes. when i came back out, i looked at lynci again, and she started to turn blue. i yelled at c, picked her up and began stimulating her. she continued to turn blue/gray, c grabbed her and began cpr. i called 911 and she finally came to after cpr. she opened her eyes, but didn't cry. the fire dept. and ambulance got here, as did our friend, julie, whom we called to watch quinnie and rhys as we went to the hospital.
the thing is, her monitor never. went. off. not for low heart rate. not for her ceasing to breathe. it. never. went. off.
at the hospital, they took xrays, started iv's, gave her oxygen, etc. the dr. decided to admit her, first to the peds floor, but after looking at her xrays, decided to put her back into the nicu (whew). the xrays showed that there is fluid in the upper portion of her right lung. it looks like aspiration pneumonia, but, as of right now, no diagnosis has been made.
all of her cultures and tests so far have come back negative, which, on one hand is good, but on the other hand makes us wonder what happened. there was a suspision of rsv, but the initial test came back negative, but i guess that there are alot of false negatives on the quick test. so we wait.
also, since lynci's monitor failed, we were scared that the same thing would happen to quinn. so, at 3 a.m. on saturday, nurse julie lent c her car and she came home to get her phone charger and check on quinn and me. quinn had been coughing, so c took her to the er. the dr. understood our concern, and didn't know what was wrong with lynci yet, so, he admitted her too.
friday and saturday, lynci was put on cpap. today she is on low flow canula and satting well. quinn is asymptomatic, and pending her rsv results tomorrow, will be discharged. lynci bought herself at least a 7-10 day stay at hotel st. v.
if only we knew how much they missed their nicu friends, we would have just shown them a picture.
