thoughts on a tuesday evening

have you ever been chillin', just minding your own beeswax, when, suddenly, something, anything, takes you back in time? it could be a scent or a word or a place. tonight, mine was a double whammy of c talking about some little speech that she has to give and me glancing at the girls.

if you know anything about us, you know what a terrifying start the girls had. being born at 25 weeks and weighing 1 lb 7 oz and 1 lb 15 oz, caused a lot of scary days and nights. we had doctors who could give us best scenarios, but really, no one knew what our future held. viability, physical disabilities, cognitive hurdles... we faced them all. and somehow, some way, we came through it unscathed.

when lyncoln was readmitted to the nicu, and eventually transported to Pittsburgh, we were told that a nissen and g-tube were inevitable. she was microaspirating, and this caused aspiration pneumonia, which was causing her apnea and brady spells. we fought to NOT have the surgery. they tried to figure things out... which led to an mri. the verdict? she had pvl. pvl is a white brain matter injury. the pediatric neurosurgeon told us that she wouldn't be able to eat... that she wouldn't know how, and that she NEEDED the nissen and g-tube to get nourishment. we. fought. hard. she knew HOW to eat; her reflux made it painful.

long story short, they were wrong. here I am, with both girls in front of me, playing on the ipad, bantering back and forth with the script from 'frozen.' we just finished dinner. they polished off a piece of lasagna, yogurt and 3 mini reese's cups.

they were wrong, and here we are, with everything so right in our world.

  1. Awesome that you fought for what you knew was right & succeeded!
Our boys were born at 29 weeks but luckily had no major hurdles to overcome. We were not able to hold or touch G for 5 days because of a skin irritation he developed at just a day old, he had a spinal tap done & we had to wait for results before he could be taken out of isolation (turned out to be nothing really) They each also had horrible reflux that they eventually outgrew around 16 months old. Isn't it amazing how perfect they all are after such an early & uncertain start?! :)
