produce ramblings...

during the summer, we easily go through two watermelons per week. along with a cantaloupe, a bunch of kiwi, seedless green grapes and a small farm of strawberries. i consider myself an expert melon picker (no comments ;-) ). as i choose just the perfect beauty, you can find me checking the weight and the color and the smell of each one until i find just the perfect watermelon. well, the past two or three melons have been less than stellar. i didn't want to admit it. i didn't want to face the truth. but today, i came face-to-face with the sad realization that melon season here in nw pa, is over. done. kaput. no longer accessible is the bright red sweetness that tantalizes our tastebuds with it's juicy love... in it's place is lackluster pink graininess of memories that once were... sigh.

on a brighter note, today, as i was dicing the last of the season's watermelons, i also cubed up a mango... and i must say, this was the BEST mango that i have ever tasted... and, along with watermelons, i consider myself a mango aficionado. also, surprisingly, my first fruit love, the gala apple, are remarkably crisp and sweet now!

so, as i bid farewell to my friend, the watermelon of 2010, i welcome the sweetness of the next batch of seasonal fruit to our table... and i thank you :-)

  1. Melons...*snicker*

I had some organic peaches (purchased at Wegmans) last week and they were the BEST peaches I've had in a very very long time!
