there are certain moments in our lives that strike us in unusual ways. one of these days came on mlk day...
after we dropped the kids off at daycare, c went in to kiss rhys, and i noticed that they were listening to a story about dr. martin luther king, jr. the kids were all sitting and listening intently. after school, we asked rhys what he learned at school, and he didn't mention dr. king. until the next day...
as c was driving the kids home from school, rhys posed the question, "mommy? am i white?" apparently the story and conversation about dr. king had struck a chord in our wee one. i know how the conversation in school went- it was the same conversation that i had with my kindergarteners... about how the color of one's skin dictated how people were treated and where they sat on buses and what school they went to. it was all innocent enough. but he never knew. he never noticed skin color until now. it. broke. my. heart. the topic hasn't come up since, but still... still it stings a bit.
there was the sad... now here's the happy...
today, marc brown, the author of the 'arthur' books, visited my school! of course i'm a fan of arthur, but i didn't think that i'd be as excited as i was to meet mr. brown! i was as giddy as a schoolgirl, gushing all about! marc brown was a sincere, gentle, kind man, who took the time to sign every single k-3 student's book, as well as every staff member and their own personal children's books.
i think that i'm going to trot off to martha's vineyard this weekend to have a kiki with my new bff (how'd ya like that sentence, maguire friends?)
